Solid Hardwood is milled from one piece of wood. Due to the solid construction, this product is more susceptible to moisture related problems, such as gapping and cupping. Therefore Solid products cannot be installed below ground level. 3/4" thick solid products offer the consumer the ability to sand and refinish the product many times, providing a situation where the floor can last as long as the house. Although exposure to moisture, whether it is humidity, spills, or leaks will significantly decrease the life of the floor.
It is recommended to use a felt/moisture paper underneath a solid hardwood. This will help minimize differences in humidity between the top and bottom of the floor. This will in-turn decrease the chance of gapping and cupping.
Typically 3/4" solid floors use a nail/staple installation method. There are thinner solid products, 5/16" to 1/2" thick, which can be glued down.
