Laminate is constructed of a bottom balancing layer/moisture barrier, a high-density fiber-board (HDF) core material, decorative pattern, and the finish. Laminates can be installed on, above, or below grade. They are installed in a floating fashion over a layer of foam underlayment. Laminates tend to be more durable than Hardwoods because a stronger, harder finish can be applied to the surface because the core product does not expand and contract as much.
Many laminate manufactures boast laminates as indestructible and moisture resistance, but laminates can wear and are affected by moisture. Although laminates are more resistant then hardwoods to scratches in heavy traffic area they can scratch and wear. In high moisture areas, such as full bathrooms and wet basements, laminate products will show signs of curling and buckling. If moisture or water soaks into the core of a laminate it will swell and buckle.
Laminates are a good and inexpensive solution to dressing up any home on any level of the house. Many inexpensive laminates work well for rental properties because of their ease of installation and low cost. Many high-grade laminates give the appearance and look of real hardwood with single plank designs, bevel edges, and high gloss finish.
